What should you look for when buying Goji/Fructus Lycii?

While wandering the aisles at my favorite Chinese Grocers:

I paid $2.99 for a bag of dried fructus lycii (wolfberry, goji, lycium barbarum).

bad goji

That is a really good price, even better than the prices in my amazon store.

When I got it home and opened it, it looked like it had been sprayed with something. It was much shinier than any goji I had bought before and felt like it had a 'shine' on it. It also had a really bad smell, like a chemical smell.

I decided to try to make wolfberry tea with it.

It was weird. There were no floaters.

Normal tea has floaters:

And it smelled! I couldn't take it. I threw the whole bag away. I wondered where I would be now if that had been my first purchase of fructus lycii. I would not have made this site.

Be picky!

I heard from another Chinese friend, whom I call Han, that you should always look for darker berries when buying a bag of dried Goji. Berries that are lighter have chemicals and may have been dried differently.

Additionally, she soaks her dried goji for 2 to 4 hours and then drains it, and then makes goji tea. Because the first soaking is to clean and absorb, and the second is to make tea. I told her that I rinse it and she said that wasn't enough!
