I had to laugh after seeing Ray Sahelian, MD's site. He is questioning the same things I am!
So how do you sort through all the names for this Wolfberry, Fructus Lycii, Goji stuff?
Get this. Lycium Barbarum is the medicinal name, and Fructus Lycii is the latin name, while Goji is the common Asian name and Wolfberries is the americanized name. They are all different names for the same thing!
Sure, there is different quality by region. Some like 'Himilayan' while I prefer the 'Ningxia' province (because of my friend Xuhui and her recommendation). But if you are having a discussion about wolfberries, goji, fructus lycii or lycium barbarum you are having a discussion about any of them! They are the same thing.
Remember the names!
These names are the same. If you are getting Fructus Lycii, you are getting Lycium Barbarum.
It seems to me that the common names are the ones with the distinction.
So how does Goji fit in to all this? I think it is a derivitive of Gou Qu Zi. As an English-speaking American, I would say that as 'Goh Cue Zee'. However, I think the Qu Zi turns more into Chi. That is why it sounded like Goat Cheese when Shooey said it.
